Secrets to Summer Snacking

Chill out with Summer Snacks

Whether you’re on a summer road trip and or participating in seasonal activities like camps and sports, snacks are Mom’s secret weapon when out and about this summer. Balanced snacks are key to maintaining energy, keeping everyone happy and having fun. Plus, good snacks can quell the “are we there yet” refrain during vacations. To help everyone stay full and focused on better-for-you options, think about the following tips for at-home and on-the go:

  • Make Kids Part of the Pantry-Stocking: Kids often react better to their choices when they’re involved in the decision-making process. So take them to the store, or have the kids help to order the week’s groceries. Allow them to vote from a pre-determined list of options “this or that?” and while you choose, talk about the delicious flavors and tastes of the snacks.
  • Consider All of the Summer “Bags” to Pack: Just like school backpacks, make it an event to pick out a fun bag and get the family to help weigh in on the contents. Look for a variety of snacks that won’t melt in the sun, and will stay whole against all of the towels and equipment. Depending on where you’re going:
    • Camp Backpacks – Looking for an option that won’t melt or get squished with a lunch bag or during camp activities? Try a reusable container filled with a trail mix – perfectly themed for camp days – that includes a healthy serving of raisins plus your kids’ favorite staple snacks. You can mix it up for each day of the week, but keep a consistent whole-fruit option.
    • Pool Bags – You need an option that can withstand the summer sun and also stand up to the unhealthy options at the pool snack counter. Sun-Maid Fruity Raisin Snacks –are made from golden raisins and are also non-GMO, gluten-free and contain no added sugar or artificial ingredients. With new fruity flavors of Tropical Punch and Peach there’s something for everyone!
    • Road Trips – While packing the cooler bag, you’re looking for a better-for-you option that is a delicious treat, but better-for-you – look no further than Sun-Maid Yogurt-Covered Raisins! With flavors like Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry and Peanut Butter – these little boxes contain fun combinations to keep kids (and parents) from requesting another pit stop.
  • Chill Out With Your Favorite Snacks: During the hot summer months, there’s nothing better than a cool treat. Challenge yourself to make your snacks something that can be frozen or cold from the refrigerator. From Frozen Yogurt Sour Raisin Bites to Raisin Bacon Avocado Toast – there are so many recipes to explore that incorporate better-for-you ingredients and a fun-twist on a summertime snack.
